Training

I am dedicated to the teaching of Pekiti-Tirsia Kali as it has been taught to me without mixing it with other martial arts. This keeps it pure. PTK is a family art that has been passed down to Supreme Grandmaster Leo Gaje from Grand Tuhon Conrado B. Tortal.

Training focuses on combat skill specific conditioning that develops the mental and physical attributes necessary for edged/impact weapons combat. Attributes are developed within the footwork drills and weapons drills of Pekiti-Tirsia Kali. This is achieved by following the Training Phases and Process, which consists of the following: (1) Individual Execution and Training, (2) Combat Drills, and (3) Combat Sparring. Of course, first comes the mental and physical mastery of oneself and their weapon. Self-control is the key.

Regularly scheduled training sessions:

Tuesday 8:30-9:45p.m.

Biographical Sketch

With nearly 20 years of martial arts experience Dustin began training in 1986 in TaeKwon Do, Jeet Kune Do, and the Filipino martial arts. Over the years, he has had the opportunity to also study Karate, Kung fu, TaiChi, Silat, Wing Chun, and Kuntao Silat de Thouars. He has attended numerous seminars covering different systems and styles. These many opportunities have provided him with a strong foundation for comparative analysis of the martial arts.

Dustin’s Pekiti-Tirsia training began in 1990 with Guro Ricky Rillera. He trained with Ricky for many years. During this time, with Ricky, he had the opportunity to assist with the Texas Defensive Tactics Instructors’ School at the DPS Training Academy in Austin, TX given by Erwin Ballarta. In 1995 he moved to Norman, OK to attend graduate school. While in Norman, he continued to teach and train in Pekiti at the USA Stars Foundation in Midwest City, OK. It was while living in Norman that he first met Tim Waid out of Dallas. He has continued training with Tim privately and at seminars.

Dustin’s training with Grand Tuhon Gaje began in 2002 during Gaje’s seminar tours of North America, specifically Texas. Now, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is the only martial art that he practices and focuses on.

He is also a professional educator with 7 years of experience at both the college and secondary level – 5 years at the college level and 3 years at the secondary level. Teaching is his primary vocation; it is what he spends most of his time doing, training for and learning about. Dustin lives in San Antonio, TX and continues to actively train, teach, and attend seminars on a regular basis.
